Why do holiday days go so quickly?…

Here it is, Friday night has come around already which means my week off is officially over.

Tonight I did the evening shift, so Mam and Dad had a bit of time off. Typical that things go wrong when Dad leaves isn’t it? We are lambing our Welsh flock outside this year, the weather is so good it has been possible. I checked the field and one ewe was looking like she was doing something so I went to have a look, there was a head of a lamb out, but lambs are supposed to come front feet first, as if they are diving out, this meant intervention was necessary or the lamb might die. After a few failed attempts I managed to catch her, get her to the shed, and helped her lamb one healthy lamb. Then she had another herself. The rest of the night went more smoothly thankfully!

I feel different, I think it is down to being a different kind of tired. On a usual Friday evening after work, my head is tired, but not my body. Tonight, my body is tired too! There is a very satisfying feel to this. I feel refreshed.

Diet this week has not gone to plan, from homemade carrot cake to chocolate eclairs, and all the healthy foods in between. Back on track tomorrow and for the rest of the week….I will report back again💪

One of the things I like to do during my annual lambing holiday is sort a pet lamb pen out (soft I know) but they love to play. I have claimed a pet for my own again this year, Nansi, she can be a friend for my nephews pet…Sali Mali!

You wouldn’t necessarily associate fashion and farming, and my attire for this week would follow that. Thank goodness for the Redback boots though, too hot for wellies.

You should remember though where fashion materials are from, I mean the natural materials we wear that are breathable, warming and cooling, not to mention long lasting. Wool, what a fantastic product, and our British farmers produce it.

So at the end of my week, here are some highlights………

Thank you for stopping by and reading my blog.

Farming life…

I have completed two days at the farm this week now, and time is flying. I am spoilt as the weather is glorious and I have had the company of my nephew for two days. He is nearly three years old, full of chatter and questions and great company. He is also very helpful and our first job this morning was to check a field where some ewes and lambs were, off he went with his crook to see the lambs were okay.

When we went around all the stock, we came across a lamb that had a bite mark, and although he was up and feeding it was still necessary to treat the wound to prevent infection. The lamb had a lucky escape and the ewe had put up a good fight, you could see this as she had tufts of loose wool as well, a protective mother at her best.

Lambing is such an enjoyable time of year because it is about new life with all the lambs that are born. Unfortunately where there is life there is also death, and we had a lost a lamb in the field overnight too. My nephew didn’t seem too phased about this at all, but I think I am getting softer as I get older.

With a lamb lost, there is a ewe without now so we aim to adopt another lamb from a ewe with triplets tomorrow. We have a pen of 6 pet lambs waiting to be adopted so we are hopeful.

It has been a busy couple of days, which means that Mam has been working out with the sheep but still feeding us very well with hearty healthy meals and too many treats. All so delicious!

Everybody is busy during the day and night at lambing time, even the sheepdog likes chilling out in the sunshine we are getting this week.

Great weather for the lambs to go out and play, and they love to race. I haven’t managed to get a snapshot if the lambs racing yet, I will keep trying this week for you, its so lovely to see then so happy.

I am now all bathed, resting and rosey cheeked ready for tomorrow. I am loving the fresh air, it is doing wonders for my complexion and this week really keeps your mind off work.

Thank you for reading, see you again soon xxx

Am I really old enough for 40th birthday parties?

This weekend was a real weekend off to enjoy with friends, and we did enjoy! We were off to Cardiff for a surprise 40th birthday party. I managed to get a nice new top, and wore some blue heels (yes, back to heels and colour again👏).

Bar 44 in Penarth was the location and with red wine, prosecco and tapas was the order of the evening, with stories and laughter were flowing well.

I still think I am 23, not 37, but something I have learnt with getting a bit older is how important it is to say yes to events. Everybody has a ridiculously busy life and it is so easy to say no because we are tired or busy, but family and friends are so important and it is important to make the effort to make time with them all.

I am home now, lying in the sofa waiting for Victoria to start (love a drama for Sunday night tv), and I’m planning my week ahead too.

I have a week off work, and I cannot wait to start in the farm with my parents in the morning to help with the lambing.

On the food front, the week went very well and I saw weight loss on the scales, I fear my weekend behaviour may have undine all my good work, I will find out tomorrow morning 🤭. We dined well this weekend, but to me the food is a part of the break

Although I still can’t fathom how it doesn’t seem long since I was going to 18th parties and now I am going to 40ths, I have had a fantastic weekend just spending time with people. Food and shoes have played an important role in all the enjoyment, and the sheep time starts in the morning!

I will catch up with you later in the week, thank you for taking the time to call by. X

Sheep time….coming soon

I cannot wait for next week, it is my annual week of holiday which I spend on the farm with Mam and Dad,

Lambing is my favourite time of year on the farm, however hard it is, and dirty, smelly, wet, cold or even hot, I just love it!

They have started without me though, here is a sneak preview of patch who had triplets this year!

Shoe realisation

I always thought I had a large selection of shoes, that could pick anything out for an outfit. It seems not any more. We have a 40th birthday party in Cardiff on the weekend, firstly I don’t know what to wear, I mean what is actually in fashion now? Secondly, my shoe collection has changed from a high heeled array of glamorous colour and sparkle to a vast selection of Birkenstocks, daps and flat boots in a range of muted tones. Things must change!

We had better go to Cardiff early, this girl needs to shop!

Food

This week is when I finally got round to starting the post-Christmas diet – a little bit late on March 18th but better late than never they say. Perhaps it will be good for me, my diets, which I am convinced are a ‘lifestyle change’ have usually ended by now.

Next week is my annual holiday to the lambing shed. My parents are sheep farmers you see, and since I can remember, lambing has always been my favorite time of year. Despite the weather, the hard work, the smells and all of that, I thoroughly enjoy my week off.

So I am two days into my new eating regime, although I weaned myself off caffeine over the last week or so, and I drank so much wine on Saturday celebrating the rugby (I am Welsh) that I don’t wish to see anymore for a while.

I have chosen this diet after meeting the author, Dr Zoe Harcombe. What a woman. As I have grown up on a farm, and I work in the red meat industry, I am completely supportive of a balanced diet. I should however, stop trying to consume enough red meat to keep the industry going all by myself.

Dr Zoe Harcombe came to speak with a group of us as part of the Farming Connect Agri Academy Rural Leadership programme. Zoe has written many books, but her focus for the day she was with us, was the true nutritional content of different foods. Having been a vegetarian, and turned to eat meat, I am intrigued by her so I am giving her diet a go. Besides, any diet that doesn’t mean counting calories, points or sins sounds good to me!
